I am an all-or-nothing type of person, so when I decided to host my very own event for York Fashion Week 2019 I knew that it was going to be ambitious, (maybe a little too much to handle at times!) but I just went for it, and Shop Your Style was born.
Thank goodness for my new style sister, Sara Anson who joined me in curating the event. I think its fair to say that there were a few moments where I probably would have quit were it not for her support, so a big shout out to Sara – I can’t wait to work with you on our next event.
Our goal was to create a space to celebrate the best of York’s high street, and to offer local female business owners a platform to showcase their brands and amazing products. We also hoped to provide an opportunity for like-minded business owners to meet and build new friendships, from which future collaborations and networks of support would arise.
Although being a self-employed business owner has many perks, it can also be tough and sometimes a little lonely. I firmly believe that the more we can all get to know and support each other, the better and more rewarding our businesses will be! It was therefore very important to me that we achieved this through Shop Your Style.
We undertook months of planning; organising fundamental aspects of the event including securing brands, finding a venue, recruiting models and sorting screens for backstage. Alongside marketing and ticket sales, we organised a charity fundraiser, and then planned even the finest details such as creating table plans, catwalk running orders, and drinks, all whilst trying to be Mums and getting on with our day-to-day lives. By the end, we were both about to collapse, but we were ready and rearing to go.
An enormous thanks goes to all of our amazing collaborators who hosted pop up boutiques; there was a real buzz and you filled the room with your warmth, professionalism and beautiful products. – Esme Louise, Let It Be Gin, Blank Rose, Mini & Me Wear, Approved.Store.Leeds, Rachel Marie Weddings, Khiels York, Hannah Lauren Millinery, Watson & White & Warrior Tees – THANK YOU.
BEHIND THE SCENES.
Behind the scenes of any big event there is always an army of amazing people dedicated to helping make the event a success. We are so grateful for all your help, so a big shout out to Foz & Giles for the tunes, Charlotte our door lady, our backstage helpers Helen, Pip, Blandine, Deb & Joan for helping set the room up – you are all superstars!
We were lucky enough to be offered the services of Salon 54 to style our models’ hair. We wanted a variety of looks, such as plaits and slick back styles, with which they did an incredible job and matched the brief perfectly.
Our makeup artists were the super talented Eleanor Jane & Faces By Flo – we asked them to create natural, summer-glow looks and they did a fantastic job – thank you ladies.
Once the venue was prepped and the models were ready, we were able to focus on the running of the evening itself. We wanted to create a really relaxed feel, where all the guests were free to move around, chat and shop the pop ups without feeling that they needed to stay seated to watch the catwalk. Models worked the room. as if it were a party and hopefully the guests enjoyed a different take on the traditional seated catwalk.
The catwalk featured looks by Topshop, Jigsaw, French Connection, Warehouse, LK Bennett and Etherial and What’s Your Skirt, both of which are independent brands. We had so much fun styling the SS19 collections and we hope it provided you with some summer inspo!
A huge thanks to the amazing models @wearitlikeruth, @fionaharringtonmodel, @incharlotteseyes, Sophie Arundel, Ruth McConnell, Amy, Hannah Young, Natalia, Edeena, and Gena!
You were all sensational and worked the room in style! We really appreciate you giving up your time to be involved in our event.
